Prof. Martin Kersten, CEO

Martin is the chief architect of the MonetDB open-source columnar database system. He has co-founded three other SMEs in the database market. Between 1985 and 2011, he was the head of the Database Architectures group at the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science (CWI). Martin has received a number of prestigious international awards, e.g. the ACM SIGMOD E.F. Codd innovation awards for his contributions to the database community, the SIGMOD Systems Award for the design and implementation of MonetDB, and the HiPEAC Tech Transfer Award for successful technology transfer from academia to industry. In 2016, he became ACM Research Fellow, marking him as one of the leading 1% computer scientists world-wide.

Dr. Ying Zhang, COO


Ying has worked in EU research projects for more than 10 years. Through them, she gained an international reputation as an excellent and empathic project manager in multi-country R&D projects.

Ying has a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam on distributed XML processing. From 2010 to 2013 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CWI on scientific array database management systems.

Dr. Niels Nes, CTO


Niels was a lead engineer at the data mining start-up Data Distilleries, acquired by IBM. He also co-founded MonetDB B.V. and Vectorwise, which was acquired by Actian.


Niels has a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam on image databases. From 1999 to 2019 he worked at CWI, first as a research staff member in the Database Architectures research group, later also as the manager of IT and Facilities. 

Drs. Sjoerd Mullender, CQA 

Sjoerd co-started a company on multi-media authoring from 1997 to 2000. After that, he took the role of ensuring that open-source software is accessible on a wide range of platforms. He oversees the quality of the MonetDB releases and provides for hardcore consultancy on its elaborate code base.

Sjoerd was a senior software engineer at CWI from 1987 to 2019. He was one of the first developers of Python.
